Lawn Sprinkler Heads

A lawn sprinkler system has many advantages whereby it saves water and does not require intense labour whereby you have to drag a hose around the garden on a daily basis. In addition a sprinkler system also adds value to your home.

When you have your system installed you need to be aware of the fact that there are two different types of lawn sprinkler heads one being a spray head and the other being a rotor head and the different between the two are as follows:

  • The lawn sprinkler spray heads when installed pop up from under the ground when the lawn sprinkler system is activated. These types of heads also produce a large volume of water in a relatively short time which makes these heads a popular choice and they are more suitable for watering flat surfaces which will ensures no water wastage.
  • The lawn sprinkler rotor heads have a much lower application rate and are mainly used where slopes occur as these heads spray water in concentrated areas and these heads are particularly well suited if you have a large areas of lawn that needs watering.

In addition lawn sprinkler heads such as pop ups are made from plastic  and eventually  they tend to get stuck above the ground as they age or get clogged up with dirt and as a result either break off or get chopped off by the lawn mower which in turn results in water wastage. However these pop up heads are very easy to replace and you can do this yourself without having to call in a professional.

You need to check all your heads and remove the broken lawn sprinkler heads and take them into a hardware shop to make sure you get the right size and type. Once you have the sprinkler heads you require than you can start to replace them. Firstly you need to into the lawn that surrounds the sprinkler using a pointed shovel. Do not dig very deep as this is not necessary and there is a change you may damage one of the pipes. Remove the soil around the sprinkler head right down to the riser unscrew the old head and remove it and be careful not let any soil fall into the riser.

Clean the area thoroughly with an old toothbrush and then apply some plumbers tape onto the riser and then screw the lawn sprinkler heads on tightly. Do not close the holes before you have tested the lawn sprinkler heads and make sure that they are functioning properly. It is also advisable to turn the sprinkler line on for a second or two in order to blow out any dirt which may have fallen into the line while you were working on the heads.

Now you can fill the holes up carefully and make sure none of the heads are above the surface and replace the grass. Your sprinkler system should be as good as new. One should maintain the system regularly and the system will last for many years to come.
